This guide is to assist those that need an easy and quick guide to upgrade a brand new VSP4850GTS that has just been unboxed.
It is assumed that you know how to unbox the switch, insert power supply, apply power and console into the switch.
We are going to use VLAN1 (10.0.0.1) so we do not have to add a VLAN, use port 1 for the link to a workstation (10.0.0.2). The workstation used in this guide is a Windows 8 laptop and we are running WinSCP as the FTP client.
Serial settings are: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit (9600/8-N-1)
The encryption module will NOT be downloaded in this example.
Step 1:
- Login to the switch and perform basic configuration to get the management up.
- The default username is "rwa" and the default password is "rwa"

- using WinSCP copy the .tgz file to the /intflash directory on the VSP4850GTS. In our example we are upgrading from 3.0.0.0 to 3.0.1.0 so the filename is "VSP4K.3.0.1.0.tgz"
Step 4:
- Add and activate the new sofware downloaded

- commit software so that the upgrade is permanent. The VSP4850GTS out of the box has auto commit so if left running for 10 minutes the switch will commit the software itself, but if you power down the switch the software activate will not persist and upon powering the switch back up the old software will load.
